In 1798 James Phipps, an eight year old boy, was injected with the cowpox virus from the lacerations of Sarah Nelms, a young milkmaid. In ten days he recovered from the sickness, and about two months later after his recovery he was injected with the smallpox virus. The test was a success and James did not contract the illness! A couple years later Edward wrote a book on his Smallpox findings. His book An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae a disease discovered in some of the western countries of England, particularly Gloucestershire and Known by the Name of Cowpox was very controversial with the medical field at the time.
